Genetic and environmental robustness are distinct yet correlated evolvable traits in a gene network

چکیده

Robustness to genetic or environmental disturbances is often considered as a key property of living systems. Yet, in spite being discussed since the 1950s, how robustness emerges from complexity architectures and it evolves still remains unclear. In particular, whether not independent various sources perturbations conditions range adaptive scenarios that can be considered. For instance, selection for heritable mutations likely modest indirect, its evolution might result indirect on pleiotropically-related character (e.g., homeostasis). Here, I propose treat measurements quantitative characters, study theoretically, by individual-based simulations, their propensity evolve independently. Based simple evolutionary model gene regulatory network, showed five expression non-genetic were substantially correlated. was mutationally variable several dimensions, components could differentially under direct pressure. Therefore, fact sensitivity factors rely same networks does preclude distinct histories components.

A Network Characteristic That Correlates Environmental and Genetic Robustness

As scientific advances in perturbing biological systems and technological advances in data acquisition allow the large-scale quantitative analysis of biological function, the robustness of organisms to both transient environmental stresses and inter-generational genetic changes is a fundamental impediment to the identifiability of mathematical models of these functions. An approach to overcomin...

Default Network Deactivations Are Correlated with Psychopathic Personality Traits

BACKGROUND The posteromedial cortex (PMC) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are part of a network of brain regions that has been found to exhibit decreased activity during goal-oriented tasks. This network is thought to support a baseline of brain activity, and is commonly referred to as the "default network". Although recent reports suggest that the PMC and mPFC are associated with affective...

A hypertension gene: are we there yet?

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Essential hypertension is a major risk factor for the development of other cardiovascular diseases and is caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors, with up to 50% of blood pressure variance currently attributed to an individual's genetic makeup. By studying genes that cause monogenic forms of hypertension and ...

A Unifying Mathematical Framework for Genetic Robustness, Environmental Robustness, Network Robustness and their Tradeoff on Phenotype Robustness in Biological Networks Part II: Ecological Networks

In ecological networks, network robustness should be large enough to confer intrinsic robustness for tolerating intrinsic parameter fluctuations, as well as environmental robustness for resisting environmental disturbances, so that the phenotype stability of ecological networks can be maintained, thus guaranteeing phenotype robustness. However, it is difficult to analyze the network robustness ...

Environmental Noise, Genetic Diversity and the Evolution of Evolvability and Robustness in Model Gene Networks

The ability of organisms to adapt and persist in the face of environmental change is accepted as a fundamental feature of natural systems. More contentious is whether the capacity of organisms to adapt (or "evolvability") can itself evolve and the mechanisms underlying such responses. Using model gene networks, I provide evidence that evolvability emerges more readily when populations experienc...
